Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton est né 7 janvier 1985 à Stevenage en Angleterre, son père est originaire de Grenade et sa mère est anglaise . Lewis débute sa carrière de pilote dans le karting à l'age de 8 ans, il se fait vite remarquer et remporte à 9 ans son premier championnat national ce qui lui vaut d'être invité a un gala organisé par autosport ou il va rencontrer le patron de l'écurie Mclaren en F1 et lui confit qu'il aimerait un jour piloter en F1 pour Mclaren le patron de Mclaren lui promet de suivre de très près sa carrière .
Trois ans plus tard, Hamilton ayant confirmé qu'il est l'un des plus talentueux pilotes de kart , Ron Dennis (le patron de Mclaren) lui fait signer un contrat à long terme et accepte de financer sa carrière.
En 2002, Hamilton effectue ses débuts dans le championnat britannique de Formule Renault, qu'il remporte l'année suivante avec l'équipe Manor Motorsport. Fin 2003, toujours pour le compte du Manor Motorsport, il dispute également deux courses du championnat britannique de Formule 3, ainsi que les deux courses internationales de Formule 3 de Macao et de Corée, réalisant la pole position de cette dernière course. En 2004, il effectue logiquement sa première saison complète de Formule 3, toujours pour la même équipe, mais dans le championnat Euroseries. Après une première saison prometteuse, il est engagé par l'équipe française ASM. Il écrase le championnat 2005, remportant 15 courses sur 20, ainsi que les Masters de Zandwoort.
