I-Description

This document is a painting. The title is "Aux courses", the english traduction would be "At the Races". It represent English high society in nineteen-twenty century. We don't know exactly the date of realisation of this work of art.
So, this painting was realized by Pierre-Goerges Jeanniot. He is a french painter who was born in 1848 and dead in 1934, at the age of eighty six years. The artistic education of Pierre-Georges Jeanniot started with his father, Pierre-Alexandre Jeanniot, who was director of L'Ecole des Beaux Arts of Dijon in France. Before to be an artist, Mister Jeanniot started a milatary career, as an infantry officer; but he dicided to stop it for painting. He began to paint lot of military scenes before portrayed Parisian women. But at the end of his life, his favorite subject was the races, like on this picture. He had also illustrated lots of famous french novels like "les Miserables" of Victor Hugo or"Candide" of Voltaire. His work can be found in many museums, though most are situated in France, but some in other contries.

II-Description

This painting reprepresents some people of the high English society, at the start of the twenty century, who are ate the races.
Horse racing was a very popular sport in this time, and lots of people loved it. During the mid 1800's hors races grew and became very popular by 1890 when there were over 300 racetracks in United Kingdom.
In the middle of the painting, we can see a woman who wore a white dress, with white gloves and a white hat. I think the painter wanted to make her important at the eyes of people because the other characters around this lady are all in black or in brown. This woman is sat on a chair, and she is speaking with a man with a grey costume, a blue scarf and a mustache. The girl is not in front of her speaker: she is showing her back to him, and her head is just a bit turned to can talk with him. I think it is very impolite because you have to be in front of someone when you are talking with him, but the high society in this time had a lot of very stranges rules, and it do maybe part of it. An other strange thing: the lady has an umbrella but it is not raining. Maybe it is to protect her of the sunshine. On the right-hand side we can see an other woman whose is all in black ocontrary to the woman of the middle who is all in white. The lady in black doesn't has umbrella but she has a cane. The only things of colour on her are her red hat, her white scarf, her white gloves and her face. I think maybe the artist wanted to paint a lady who represent the right, and one who represent the darkness. The lady on the left look nicer than the lady on the right. On the left hand side, we can see two man. They wore costumes and they are looking a man on a horse who is situate in the top left hand corner. The jockey has a white pair of trousers and a yellow jacket. He his riding his horse, maybe he is going to run a race.

III-Interpretation

Like I said higher, I think the autor wanted to show to advantage the lady in white: the colours of her dress prove it, like her size who is lightly more important compared to other characters. She has as well the better place of the picture: the middle. Maybe it is to show that the goodness is stronger that the darkness. We can see that the lady in black is smaller than the woman in white. We don't see her legs and her feet, contrary to the white lady where we can see her body full.
All the characters of this picture look happy, exept the woman in black. Maybe she hate other people, or maybe she is sad. Maybe the painter wanted to show the rich people is laughing and be happy, contrary of the poor english people who are working in coal's mines at the same time. We can see too that all characters are speaking with other, and only two are looking at the jockey: the autor wanted maybe underline the society life of this kind of events.

IV-Conclusion

This elegant painting show very well the life in the high society during the begenning of the 20 century. The harmony of colours, the attitude of the characters, and the happiness who emmanate from this masterpiece, make of it a great work of the painting, unfortunately unrecognized.
This work illustrate with a subtle shade of colours a few importants subjects of the 20 century. The most apparent is that races was more a link place than a game place. People went here to show themself and to see other important people. The races was just a pretext, in reallity it was a social club, a kind of a very big living room without tea.
It prove too that the social relations had a very important place at this time, contrary to now, where this kinf of gathering have tendency to die out to let place at the growth of the individualism.
Secondly, we can imagine that Jeanniot underline the monstrance of wealth of this people in the idea to denounce the inegality betwin the different classes in the British society in this time. It's sad to think that many english people, including children, was dieing of hunger at the same time.
Finally we can see the opposition of two radicals kind of people, even through the same classe of society. Then that the principal character of this work, the woman in white breathe the happiness, the self-assurance and the goodness; the woman in black, on the right hand side, her seem self-effacing, shy and reserved.
But what we'll remember principally is that Pierre-Georges Jeanniot was a master of painting and a very good artist.
