He was born in London on April 16th 1889. His parents were singers. When he was a baby, his father left in America. When he was three years old, his mother fell ill and he and his brothers had to go to an orphanage. He'll have then been with his Mother-in-law (Where from his movie :"The Kids"). He'll go for his first times on the stage at five years. Then, in 1896, his father died ; Chalie was ten years old... In 1913, he went to the United States. This was beginning of his film career in Hollywood. He was both an actor and a film director. He immediately became an extremely popular star and acted in as many as seventy silent films. In 1915, Chaplin signed a much more favorable contract with Essanay Studios. In 1916, the Mutual Film Corporation paid Chaplin US$6700,000 to produce a dozen two-reel comedies. Talking films or "talkies" appeared in the 1930's, but Chaplin continued making silent films until 1940 when he made his first talking film, THE GREAT DICTATOR. Humanist, Chaplin was worried about what took place in Europe. Even so the pressures, the Dictator goes out in October, 1940. Plunged into the war, the United States ask to hisartists to be mobilize. The private life of Chaplin will know finally the peace when he will marry, in June, 1943, Oona O' Neill, whose eight children he will have. In 1947, the war won Hollywood. The FBI hates Charlie Chaplin ! After the second world war he made four more films. Chaplin lived in the United States for forty years but never became an American citizen. "I'm a citizen of the world", he declared. In 1953, because of political and personal problems, he had to leave the United States. He sold his house ub Berverly Hills and then settled in Switzerland where he spent the rest oh his life with his large familly.
