I. Summary
This text is an extract of the Independent of the 21 March 2007. The subject is the European Union which is a potent symbol of peace and unity.
The European Union has celebrated his 50th anniversary in Berlin.
On one hand, we can criticize the EU for many reasons : clumsy administrative structure, labyrinthine bureaucracy, … But on the other hand, we must recognize that the European project is a success. At the beginning, the politicians wanted to banish war from the continent and now EU citizen can travel across the continent without visa, they can work everywhere, … Moreover the euro allows the EU to be more efficient and reinforce the unity of the EU’s economy.
We can imagine that the abandonment of the Constitutional Treaty by France and Netherlands was a crushing argument for the EU’s capacity to act. However it shows that the EU survive thanks to his institution.
As a conclusion, like other countries want to take part of the EU, we can say that EU was a model of international association for 50 years.
II. Commentary
Like the author, I think that it is easy to criticize the European Union. I know the EU does not have a professional army or fail to integrate minority like Muslim minority.
The European Union is a global superpower of world historical importance, second to none in economic clout for many reasons.
First the European Union have a social–welfare system which allows Europeans to choose to work fewer hours than Americans for less pay. Americans need to have the permission of their employers
Secondly the European Union is autonomous : the Europe doesn’t need American’s product.
Thirdly the European Union is a real politic power : the Europe is the other pole of politic decision; for historical reasons (for example colonisation), the EU have a lot of partners in the world (Africa, Middle East, …). So EU can resolve dispute throughout this regions without the USA’s opinion
Moreover the entry of new country in the EU can give a new scale. The interest of new country allows to speak of “a new European dream".
Nevertheless, in my opinion, the two continents are inseparably for the common history and culture.
